Valentine's Day: The Time I Saw Some Borracho Serenade His Vieja

Mecano's "Los Amantes" is about taking a serenata to your lover. What a great idea, huh? Once, when I was still living south of the border and on my way home from a rowdy party, I witnessed what most have only seen in old-school Pedro Infante movies: some drunk dude was screaming/crying outside his vieja's home with the support of a full mariachi. I'll admit it wasn't very romantic, but it was endearing. Homegirl never actually came out but her dad did and he told everyone to STFU and leave or "los voy a callar a balazos" [I'll silence you with bullets] and that basically cleared the entire street. Even the señoras that where sweeping the sidewalk minding their own business ran back into their homes.
